Welcome to the type-design list, where font designers can toss ideas, ask informations, and communicate with other font designers!

This open list has been created as an electronic way to continuing the wonderful spirit found by participants at the Typecon 98 conference, in Westborough, Massachusets, where type designers met in a relaxed setting, to discuss their hopes, concerns, and projects.

Among the topics that where discussed at the conference, and that will be welcome here (not limitative):

  • Font creation tools
  • Hinting/screen fonts
  • Kerning
  • New character designs / Legibility / Readability
  • Marketing
  • Legal protection / Licensing
  • Self-publishing versus being published by big foundries
  • Useful books
  • Current events (conferences, shows, legal, etc.)
  • Type designers status : personal business, corporation, employment
  • Tips and tricks, undocumented software features in Fontographer and other font editors
  • New releases in font programs
  • Compatibility problems with application programs and solutions (if any)
  • Bug report
  • History and the future of type, technologically and design

... Plus any other topic directly related to type design, or the type designer as a person, or the type design business!

We have been actively discussing recently the creation of a collective of type designers, called TyD. This collective is in development, and we are at the stage of defining the charter of the collective, and its logo.

The Charter is discussed in the thread "TyD : Charter Thread", and the logo is discussed in "TyD: Logo Thread". You may browse the archives of the discussion list to see how this collective came to be. You are welcome to participate in the current reflexion, and help us elaborate that new collective of type designers.
